Project Anyaral: Photo Dump - 3 Months of Painting WoT!

Its been a month since the last update, but I'm not holding anything back with this one, so, take a deep breath....

 Devau Sempa, Matriarch, hatchlings, Jenta Outcasts, and Grishak Jenta all added to the Anyaral: World of Twilight Devanu Gallery. (12 Pictures)

Delgon Gunner (un-named, prototype piece), command pieces, characters, and mechanicals in many varieties all added to the Anyaral: World of Twilight Delgon Gallery (19 pictures)

The mighty Belan has seen paint, and added to the characters and beasts gallery. (3 Pictures)

More Dhogu have been painted, but the gallery updates for them have been limited to Just a couple of group shots (2 Pictures)

The Empire have not been left out themselves either, and the galleries have see the addition of the Slinger Rhyad and the Mounted Herders to their ranks - big group shot will have to wait until I can spare more space for these guys however! (6 Pictures)

And last but by no means least for this round of gallery updates, we have a complete new army page - The Engu are here! (10 pictures)

Phew, well I guess that's a way to spend an Easter Good Friday!

return of the website, and Project Anyaral - more WIPS

First up, sorry for the website downtime. Long time viewers will be unfortunately used to it at this time of year, as is forgot, once again to update my payment info and missed the reminders, whoops! But I'm pleased to say it's back, and nothing is missing. 

In the mean time, paint has been being slung as usual, this time in the direction of more Anywral : World of Twilight figures, and another new sub- faction. The Enugan warriors are a much larger cousin of the Fubarnii and don't require many troops to hold their own on the table. A great little force to paint. Not too happy with their pet Tahela, or corresponding furs, but I'm hoping to try a couple more schemes when I get a moment and refine their look a little. 

Thus, it's dodgey ipad photo time - proper pics of all the recent WoT work this weekend!

Project Anyaral - Painting Challenge January Galleries

They're running a painting Challenge over on the Anyaral: World of Twilight Forums . Whilst January hasn't allowed much chance to paint new figures from the range for myself, it has prompted me to take some proper photos of the ones I've done over the last year, and finally update the HobbyBrush Galleries with them!

First Up, the Delgon Gallery is online. Some of my new pics didnt come out too good, but there's lots more for them on the workbench in February, so expect an update next month! (7 pictures) 

Secondly, probably my favourite of the forces of Anyaral I've had the pleasure to paint. Clan Orel make their presence known and get their own gallery! (10 Pictures)

Random paint - got colour in (on...) my bones....

More random paint slinging, and more poor ipad photos to prove it this week! I've been doing more work on the DA bust shown previously, but hit a block on colours for fur and mettallics, so turned my attention back to smaller pieces and quick paint jobs to tick them off. 

All three are From the Reaper Bones kickstarter, and have no use destined for them - purely quick paints to feel like I'm making progress without getting bogged down in another proper project until I've finished the bust! 

This big guy was painted as I wanted to try out the life colour flesh tones set I picked up a while back but haven't used. They're not bad paints, but they do separate easily. This works fine if your doing a quick job, painting out the pot and a bit rough like on this guy, but they're not so great when thinning and / or mixing with other ranges, so not my new solution for display work. 

This was actually a mis cast. He was meant to come with a full length shotgun, but the barrel had bubbled. Thankfully, sawn off is a good loom too, so one snip and it was paint ready! Te base is an old resin one I've had in the stores for ages, and was actually the reason I chose him to paint - base came first! 

 

This guy got onto the workbench right off the back of the mordheim witch hunters I did a few weeks ago - I guess the style kind of fitted with the,. The model suffered from the bones material being slightly flexible in the guns and they took quite some persuading to get them to stay (nearly) straight. They're also not that shiny in reality - hopefully they'll come out more representative when I get these pieces in front of my proper camera! 

So he here you have it, three random, unrelated quick pieces, but all good fun to paint. 

Our fortnightly Anyaral:World of Twilight gaming night is starting back this week after an extended festive break, so hopefully I'll get re-inspired to paint up some more of those great figures for the painting challenge! I've also got a lot of them previously finished which need photographing for the hobbybrush proper..... So much hobby to do!

And again, things from ages past....

More from the backlog of miniatures painted in years gone by this week, but these are the last which I am currently aware of, so I will get photographing and painting new stuff again!

First up I have a mixed gallery of figures from the French company, Fenryl. I first ran into them in 2004 when they produced a set of miniatures for the Boxing Day Tsunami appeal, and have picked up various pieces from them in the intervening years. Granted, many of them remain bare of paint, but those which have passed the workbench can be found here! Fenryl Fantasy Gallery (15 pictures)

Next up, it's back to the old favourites in the form of 6mm sci fi, and more importantly, the Dark Realm Miniatures / Seeds of War line. The Desert Pax Arcadian gallery (10 pictures) shows a small force, painted for sale in 2013. 

And finally, we stay with the 6mm sci if but go right back into the depths of the photo vaults, to bring you a mixed gallery of two Imperial Guard commissions (22 pictures), both completed back in the early stages of my Mercenary Brush ways, around 2003. Not the highest quality photos, but they're part of my history so I'm posting them anyway! 

Of more current gaming and painting....

Thought I'd better give a hint that it's not all old stuff going on around here! 

Having painted over 100 of the wonderful vehicles from warlord games in recent months, I'm having a break from 28mm WW2 and have been painting more random figures from The Reaper Bones range, and am looking back to the Anyaral: World of Twilight range for my next small collections to complete. They've got a promotional painting challenge running at the moment on their forums, and there's nothing like the temptation of some more wonderful models as a reward for painting wonderful models I already have!

From the vaults....

Whilst doing my first proper gallery update in a year yesterday, I made a discovery.

There are a few galleries which I created years ago, which for some reason have never been linked in to the hobbybrush site, so have never been "live" and just hidden in the background!

It'll take a while to sort them out and make sure they're populated correctly, but a couple are pretty much ready to go - presenting the Exodus Wars 6mm sci-fi gallery (15 pictures), and the corresponding 6mm sci fi section. Nothing  recently painted in here, but it does mean it benefits from at least one piece when I was still being silly in the small scales...... Yes, those are eyes on a 6mm trooper.... :)

Other end of my personal painting scale is busts. So here's a more recent piece, but I still don't remember when I set up the gallery - guess it was just one of those years.... Anyway - here's bob, the evil one! Painted in 1hour 45 just to ensure I actually finished a bust for once!

Random paint - mordheim Witch hunters

The title says it all - for no reason whatsoever, I've painted a mordheim witch hunters mob. I've had the models since the days I used to paint for the GW Fanatic / specialist games studio, so over 10 years, and it was about time they got some paint!

Fun to work on, but they'll be up on eBay soon as I have no use for them. Have to get proper photos before then, but for now, I'm afraid all I can provide is dodgey lighting and ipad shots....

Twilight updates, Gaming and the pledge!

Of Gaming...
Not content with Rolling dice on 3 different tables at Salute, I also played a little game at the GGC on Monday. Alsmost a repeat of my Salute WoT game, my Fubarnii militia and Herders, led by Commander Brenar faced off against 3 Devanu Jenta and 6 Grishak.

Despite having my head screwed on a bit better this time, and using my Herder Captain to his full potential, my Slingers too their new "Suicide Slingers" title a bit too litterally. Whether they were slinging playdough or simply drunk I dont know, but they failed to inflict damage on the encroaching grishak turn after turn. This left me with the Devanu on my doorstep at full strength. Delicate combat manouvering ensued.... in other words the Grishak ate everything in sight. Brenar and his militia did some fancy footwork however, and took down a Jenta and a fair few Grishak, but his sterling service was not to be repeated and they eventually fell trapped within an unstoppable wall of Devanu flesh.

Of Painting...
I Painted in every spare second before Salute, including a fair few World of Twilight figures for my own collections. 6 herders, Commander Brenar, two Fubarnii Jenta, 3 Knights of Relan, and an Engineer saw me almost catch up entirely on my Fubarnii before buying plenty more at Salute. The results can be seen throughout this post, as well as in the Galleries right now - see below!

The World of Twilight Fubarnii Gallery has been updated with 19 pictures of the latest additions, all noted above!

The Pledge:
Its been a long time since I made an update on the Pledge, but I still stick by it. Here's the progress report all up to date:
Models Bought: 77 (+40 at salute. More than Doubled my Purchases! Curse that show... )
Models Painted: 241 (+4 for 54mm crossbowman, 6 herders, engineer, 2 jenta, 6 for knights of Relan, and commander Brenar for a total of just 20 in 3 months :( )
Months into the Pledge: 11 - 1 important month to go!

Return to usual stylings...

Its a return to usual stylings for me now, and hopefully if I can stay active, the 3 sections will all be regulars once again.

Of Gaming...

Finally put my dice back to good use last week, and had a great game of Blitzkreig Commander aganst Matt Arnold (aka "Rug"). We play so infrequently that every game is a learning experience, but its always good fun. (THat's a World of Twilight Fubarnii Jenta in the pic by the way - didn't get any pics of the game - he's on the workbench at the moment! )

A small game (1000 points), I started being plagued with bad command rolls. In the first 3 turns, I achieved just two successfull rolls between my Co AND HQ combined, and failed to make it to the positions I had hoped for by the time the German Iron tide washed upon my soviet shores.

However, I was saved by a couple of unlucky assaults in turn 3 on the part of my opponent and my infantry held out well. Turn 4 saw my tanks (6 T70's and an early T34)rumble into action at last, taking on the enemy assault guns in a forest to forest fire fight. T70's proved to be a fair old weapon at the given range and the enemy were wiped out in a couple of rounds of firing for the loss of a single tank to enemy reactive fire.

My infantry were feeling the brunt of the enemy force, being assailed by armoured mechanised infantry and the bulk of the enemy armour in the form of panzer II's and III's. As they started to pull back, they were saved by the soviet armour making their way back through the wood to front up to the enemy once again. Firing from the woods, against enemy armour clearly visible on the open face of a hill, they had the advantage. As the infantry faught a fighting withdrawl, the tanks took their toll on the enemy armour, pushing the Germans past their fragile break point.

In the end I won by numbers. I only had two formations which hindered me when bad command rolls struck, but when they came off, the sheer weight of fire and high break point meant even the fancy manouvres of the Germans didn't stand a chance.


Of Painting...
I've been on the Brushes every spare moment I can this week. Salute is presenting a good, rare, chance to play World of Twilight and it has spurred me to paint up the majority of my remaining collection.

I've got 6 hunters, an Engineer, 2 civilian youngsters, Commander Brenner, Captain Danomar and 2 knights of Relan on the workbench all at various stages. Fingers crossed, they'll all be ready for action on the 21st!

Of updates...
But, of course, the bit you really care about is the galleries and I've opened another classic today. My Epic "Agri-Guard" Imperial Guard forces became some of the first models I posted online which earned my painting a recognizable status. I collected three massive Imperial Guard armies at the time. I have sold most, but a valuable few will always remain in my collections. The pictures in this gallery vary from the antique to the relatively recent - please forgive the mass of varying quality!

The Twilight of Easter...

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend is coming to a close here in the UK and I'm finally on the Brushes!

I'm working on a few more of my Fubarnii for the World of Twilight. I've got 6 herders on the bench as I type and a host of others waiting to see some paint. In the mean time, I remembered that my current gallery isn't even up to date & that needs fixing!

A tale of old and new

Of Gaming...
Monday night was another good one at the Guildford Games Club. Having watched a number of encounters, and bought my own squad, I finally played my first two games of Infinity Last Monday.

I do like the rules set. The way you have to think ahead to cover all angles and possibilities (such as enemy Paras ona first "intro" game! Grrr... ) really appeals to me. I really think it could be fun with two teams of Ariadna with basic rifles duking it out, but for the while I'll enjoy my plethora of special weapons none the less!!

First game I lost, to aforementioned Para. Though I would like it noted that that only occurred after my opponent stated where he was dropping, and wanting to learn the intricacies a little better, I asked "So Why didn't you choose to drop him here and do this?". To which my opponent replied "...ohh.. that's not a bad idea..." and proceeded to kill 4 ofmy team in a single turn.

Second game I was more ready for it and new more what my troops were capable of. I set up a good defensive position and waited for the right moment. When the time was right, and the passage of travel clear, my Rocket launcher exposed her position and took down the enemy medic. Now the game was on - my Ant-Tank trooper dashed from cover, got a good shot off on the enemy ORC suit with his Adhesive launcher and followed it up with a Demo charge to knock him out. His final action moved him back around a large pile of pipes, to a rather exposed position, but one which was well covered by fire from the rest of my squad. The enemy were walking into a hailstorm if they went for retribution.
The following turn the AT trooper worked back around the pipes and took out the enemy medic, and had a good try on the enemy lieutenant too. unfortunately his luck had run out, and he was subsequently taken out by the nefarious enemy para, who this time had to drop behind his own lines to shore them up. That didn't last long however as he in turn left himself open to a shot from my Kazak Veteran, and the game was called as he hit the floor.

Of Painting...

This week I've finished off another unit which has been on the workbench for an obsene amount of time. Literally years! So, FINALLY, 10 sad little classic empire handgunners are dust-free, fully painted and in the cabinet - photos next week!

In the mean time I have two galleries of the very old, and one of the very new for you in this update!


For starters, we have "Epic, The Early days" - a gallery of some of my earliest forrays into converting epic miniatures and some not-so-hot paintjobs to keep you entertained. (22 pictures)

Secondly, we go up to 10mm scale, with the eventual arrival of the inevitable Warmaster Miscellaneous Gallery. Most of these figures were painted as random painting fun when the models were new, but there's a fair variety in there from many different races! (29 pictures)

And last but not least, we jump further up the scale chart and to something brand new. It may only be a tiny one, but I open the 28mm Roman Gallery with my first completed regiment - Warlord Games Slingers. Soon to be followed by many more I hope :) (3 pictures)

A tooth for a tooth, and an eye....for a giant... ??

Its a couple of weeks unit I'm meant to have a host of giants painted up for a local event.

"Host" currently stands at two!

I have 3 little Ral partha giants, a grenadeir goblin war giant and none other than the truly massive Otherworld Miniatures Giant all put together &/or in early stages of painting.

I also have another Metal warhammer O&G giant which I've almost finished the putty work on as I'm converting it to be swinging a gobline fanatic by the leg.

So a tight deadline, but a lot on the way.

wearing goggles is a must!

I was drilling the beast that is the otherworld giant and it went together really nicely. Goggles on, careful planning, no worries. It is one of the best fitting kits I've worked on (though the sheer weight of it does mean steel pins are an absolute must!)

I finished the job, took my goggles off, sat back and looked at it. I ran my hand through my hair as I did so.

That was my error. Some of the pewter burrs from the drilling had been waiting to strike from the safety of my hair.

Long story short, I now have a minor operation to have tomorrow, to remove some entrenched metal flakes from my eye, and possibly stitch a flap of eyeball back into place.

Dont expect much new painting from me for a while, not small scale stuff anyway, so at least I have the giants to work on!

The World of Twilight...

yes yes, I know its been quiet here, but a lot's been happening in the "real world" lately, and I'm pleased to be able to say that a fair bit has been happening in the workshop too :)

Having taken 51 weeks to get the first model painted frommy modest World of Twilight collection, inspiration hit and I've finished up not just the first unit of Enuk knights, but also the first unit of militia for my Fubarnii Empire Forces.

So, there's a modest update to the Twilight Fubarnii galleries today. (6 pictures)

There have been other projects afoot, which will hopefully start bearing fruit int he next week or two. Well, they better had, or I'm going to be in some trouble!

Painting New, Uploading old...

I'm afraid its all old stuff again this week, as I work my way through the thousands of miniatures I've painted in years gone by and work out which of the photos I deem reasonable enough for public viewing!

I am still painting a mixture of my own projects and a couple of small commissions, but I've not managed to get anythign in front of the camera for a month or so. Thus, I do hope that variety will make up for the lack of any new brush work for the time being!

Day three and we ride in from the plains, and onto the pitch - Its a "Wicked Elf" team for blood Bowl (or any other fantasy football game for that matter of course...) from shadowforge!

But thats only 8 pictures... thats no good... Have a tiny but detailed Roman General to make up for it a little... ;)
